This article examines the importance of digital technology in language learning by students in present day classroom situation and tries to bring out the problems and solutions faced by teachers and instructors in using these technologies while language teaching. It also aims to make students and language teachers aware of the strategies to use digital technology in an effective manner. Digital tools also called ‘Technical Cultural Artefacts’ by A.W. Bates in his Technology, E-learning and Distance Education (London: Routledge, 2005) have been particularly useful in imparting language education. These digital tools are central to the established and recognized field of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) but are also a core part of English Language Teaching (ELT). A useful definition of CALL comes from M. Levy in his Computer-Assisted Language Learning (Oxford: Clarendon, 1997), in which he says, it is ‘the search for and the study of applications of computer in language teaching and learning’. With English as the most common ‘learned’ second language around the world, this paper will explore how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be used for English Language learning and the innovative approaches employed for language development to fulfil the needs of the new generation learners who are exposed to the different forms of digital technologies and to globalization. The methodology used is field survey were I have made use of a self-prepared questionnaire. My informants are Graduate level students (Part I, II and III) pursuing Communicative English (Major) Course in the different degree colleges under University of Calcutta. Depending on the prevalent and available informants for my data analysis I have made a comparative study between the levels of learning among students of all the three years.
